Hello!
My name is Sheri Graubert (pron: grow-bear). I am so happy you are here.
Although I am a published playwright, I am new to the world of children’s books. I love this world! Why, oh, why did I wait so long?
I am an actress and a writer. I have had plays produced all over the place, from New York to London to Japan, to the Philippines and beyond.
I have acted on five continents. I have acted up all over the place. I have never performed in Africa, which I would love to do. I have, also, never performed in Antarctica. If any of you happen to know of any Penguins who like theatre, I’m your Human.
My first children’s play won a spot in a 10-minute children’s festival in Australia.
Shortly after that, I was commissioned to write a play for kids in hospitals in New York City. In the last few years, the company expanded and the play is performed for children in other cities, also. I checked the other week and they are still performing my play, which is nice to know.
That’s a ten year run and still going!
The play is called Rick Spacey and the Space Detectives. So if you ever happen to be in a children’s hospital (especially one in New York City) you’ll know who wrote it.
The theatre company, Only Make Believe, created by Dena Hammerstein, (yes, that Hammerstein), just asked me to write the sequel. I’m excited.
I have worked with kids all of my adult life; now I work with kids as a mom, which involves much more tiredness.
I have taught Shakespeare to lots of kid. It is wonderful to see the lightbulb go on in a child’s eyes.
I have also used theatre to help teach a whole bunch of subjects from Economics, to the Creation of the Universe, to, Literacy, to…well Playwriting and Acting. You know.
I accidentally taught my oldest child to love Shakespeare.
She is starting to know more than me.
Oh, dear.
I hope to make the same mistake with my second child.
I am a proud graduate of the Children’s Book Academy Course, The Craft & Business of Illustrating Children’s Books. Prior to the course, I had two left-thumbs. Something Mira said, all the way back in the last decade (2019), made me decide to jump in with both feet and both hands.
She was right.
I learned so much about the world of children’s books and illustration, it has served to make me a better writer.
I loved it so much, I was the very first person to sign up for her ‘Craft & Business of Writing Children’s Books’, from which I have just graduated.
I still don’t know if jumping into this world was a moment of brilliance or a moment of madness, but I can feel this is a passion, and I love it.
Thank you for reading.
